Chapter Six

Momma Peach wasn't sure if she wanted to confront Heath about his true identity or not. With Marc dead, her plan to try and play snake against snake was no longer needed. As a matter of fact, Momma Peach thought, chewing on a bite of scrambled eggs, it appeared that Mr. Heath Penlin came to Alaska alone, which meant that unless the man intended to commit a monumental act of multiple homicide, he had most likely no ill intentions toward anyone except his hired killer. Momma Peach was certain Heath had traveled to the lodge to kill Marc and then leave without hurting anyone else—or so it seemed to her; criminals were a mighty funny breed who could easily change their stripes in a matter of seconds. But as it stood, Momma Peach felt confident that her theory was on track. The match box and the silver key were of no more importance, since there was a different killer to worry about. Besides, Marc was dead, leaving only the head cobra to deal with, and the head cobra wasn't as much of a threat as she had assumed he would be. The man seemed focused on money, not murder.

“Were you expecting rain today?” Momma Peach asked Mitchel instead of speaking her thoughts.

Mitchel leaned back on his wooden chair and glanced at the window in the small dining room where he, Momma Peach, Sam, Michelle and Able were eating breakfast. Heath was upstairs in his room. “Wind brought in the rain,” he told Momma Peach.

Momma Peach dipped her fork to cut a warm flapjack and picked up a piece. Except for a killer being on the loose, the morning was quiet and cozy. The dining room, although somewhat small, was rustic and inviting. Like the rest of the lodge, the walls were made of smoothed logs and the hardwood floor shone with polish. The curtains hanging over the window framed a beautiful view down to the crystal clear lake. The dining room table was long enough to seat twenty guests and well-worn by time—a dining room fit for the true wilderness around it. It was a far cry from the mundane dining rooms to be found at most motels littered across the American landscape.

Momma Peach gazed out at the rain. “It rained in the desert, it rained in Georgia, it rained in Seattle and now it's raining in Alaska. Oh, I am going to become so water-logged my skin will never smooth out. Give me strength, give me strength.”

“I like the rain,” Able confessed. “It's kinda…cozy sitting here listening to the rain fall outside.”

“Oh, I love the rain, too, baby. I just like to fuss,” Momma Peach tipped Able a wink. “And yes, baby, it's very cozy sitting in this dining room eating breakfast with the people I love.”

Able gave Momma Peach a loving look. Momma Peach was taking over his heart. “Breakfast is delicious. I've never had flapjacks this good before.”

“A dash of Momma Peach is always good for the stomach,” Momma Peach beamed.
